What is Nexium?

Nexium, and the generic alternative Esomeprazole, is a medication prescribed to treat stomach and esophagus problems including acid reflux and ulcers. Nexium works by decreasing the amount of acid produced by your stomach and healing acid damage in the stomach and esophagus. This can prevent ulcers and esophagus cancer as well as relieving symptoms including heartburn, difficulty swallowing or persistent cough. Common side effects of Nexium may include but are not limited to:

• Headaches or pain in the abdomen.

• Signs of a low magnesium blood level including unusually fast, slow or irregular heartbeat, persistent muscle spasms or seizures.
• Signs of lupus such as: a rash on the nose or cheeks; or new or worsening joint pain.
• Persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain, cramping, fever or blood or mucus in your stool.
• Signs of a vitamin B12 deficiency such as weakness, sore tongue or a numbness or tingling of the hands and feet.
• Any signs of an allergic reaction including rashes, itchiness, swelling of the face, tongue or throat, severe dizziness, breathing problems or changes in your urine amount.
