What is Estring?

Estring is a vaginal ring containing the medication estradiol, a form of estrogen necessary for many body processes. Estring releases estrogen which is absorbed directly into the skin of the vaginal wall. Estring is prescribed to treat vaginal changes caused by menopause. This includes vaginal dryness, burning, itching, burning or irritating urination and painful sexual intercourse. The Estring vaginal ring is a soft and flexible ring which is inserted in the vagina and left in place for 90 days.

• Wash and dry your hands before handling the ring.
• Insert the vaginal ring high into the vagina. If inserted correctly, you should not be able to feel it. If you are able to feel it, or if you feel any discomfort from the ring, it may not be high enough. Gently push it higher with your finger.
• Estring is usually left in place for 90 days before being removed. Do not leave Estring in place for longer than this. Estring is removed by hooking your finger through the ring and pulling it out gently.
• If the ring falls out, rinse it with warm water and insert it back into the vagina. If it continues to fall out frequently, inform your doctor.
• Discard your used ring into the trash. It should not be flushed down the toilet.

• If you have any drug allergies.
• Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
• Your medical history especially vaginal bleeding or infections, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, blood clots, stroke, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, blood clotting disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol or triglyceride levels, obesity, lupus, underactive thyroid, mineral imbalance, hypoparathyroidism, uterus problems such as fibroids or endometriosis, gallbladder disease, asthma, seizures, migraine headaches, mental or mood disorders such as dementia or depression and porphyria.
• Your family medical history of breast lumps, cancer, blood clots or angioedema.
• If you are breast feeding as this medication passes into breast milk.
• If you have recently had surgery or if you will be having surgery while taking this medication, or if you will confined to a chair or bed for an extended period of time such as on a long plane ride. These conditions can increase the chance of getting blood clots while using Estring.

Also be aware that:

• You should not smoke or use tobacco. Smoking combined with estrogens further increases your risk of stroke, blood clots, high blood pressure or heart attack. This is even more likely in females over 35.
• Estring can cause dark or blotchy areas on your face or skin. This can be worsened by sunlight. You should limit your time in the sun and wear sunscreen and protective clothing when outside. Avoid tanning booths or sunlamps.</li >
• If you get a vaginal infection while using Estring, remove the ring and replace it only nce the infection has been treated.
• You must not use this medication during pregnancy.

Common side effects of Estring may include but are not limited to:

• For patients wear contact lenses or are nearsighted, you may develop vision problems or trouble with your contact lenses.
• Nausea, vomiting.
• Increased vaginal discharge.
• Breast tenderness.
• Bloating or weight changes.
• Headaches

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following Estring side effects:

• Mental or mood changes such as depression or memory loss.
• Breast lumps.
• Unusual vaginal bleeding, irritation, itching, odor or discharge.
• Severe stomach or abdominal pain, persistent nausea or vomiting.
• Yellowing of the eyes or skin.
• Swelling of the hands, ankles or feet.
• Increased thirst.
• Increased or dark urination.
• Any signs of blood clots such as: chest, jaw or arm pain; slurred speech; sudden vision changes; unusual sweating; severe headaches; weakness on one side of the body; pain, redness or swelling of the legs; confusion; tingling, weakness or numbness in the arms or legs; breathing problems; coughing up blood; or sudden dizziness or fainting.
• Any signs of an allergic reaction such as rashes, itching, swelling of the face, tongue or throat, severe dizziness or trouble breathing.
