Why is Cymbalta prescribed?

Cymbalta (Duloxetine) is an antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorder in adults. Duloxetine is a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SSNRI) and it works by affecting the unbalanced chemicals in the brain that exist in people with depression. Cymbalta may also be used in children at least 7 years of age and adults to treat general anxiety disorder. This drug can also be used to treat a chronic pain disorder called fibromyalgia and other conditions not listed here. Talk with your doctor for more details.

• Take orally as directed by your doctor
• Usually taken 1-2 times daily
• Taken with or without food
• Swallow the capsule whole. It is meant to be slow release and crushing it or mixing it with other liquids will release the drug all at once.

Note: take Cymbalta continuously (even if you feel better). When this medicine is suddenly stopped, some conditions may become worse and you may experience unwanted withdrawal symptoms including sleep changes, mood swings, and dizziness.  

Pregnancy Warning:

• Cymbalta may cause problems in a newborn if you are taking it during your third trimester of pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medicine.

Before taking Cymbalta, 

• tell your doctor if you are allergic to Duloxetine or any other drug allergies you do have
• tell your doctor about every other medication you are taking or plan to take (including nonprescription and herbal products)
• tell your doctor about your current and past medical condition such as liver or kidney disease, seizures, diabetes, high blood pressure, bleeding disorders, bipolar disorder, or a history of drug addiction or suicidal thoughts
• tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby

Common side effects include but are not limited to:

• Nausea
• Loss of appetite
• Dry mouth
• Drowsiness
• Lightheadedness or dizziness
• Blood pressure changes. Check regularly and report ant high results to your doctor asap.

More serious side effects can occur. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience:

• confusion
• easy bruising or bleeding
• changes in sexual ability or interest
• shaking/tremors
• persistent nausea
• yellowing of the eyes or skin

Get immediate medical help if you have:

• black or bloody stool
• seizure
• pain, swelling, or redness of the eyes
• any signs of an allergic reaction - including hives, rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of any part of your face or body, trouble breathing, etc.

Why is Cymbalta prescribed?

Cymbalta is prescribed to treat depression and anxiety. 

What if I miss a dose of Cymbalta?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, do not double up capsules to make up the missed dose, simply skip it.
