What is Trelegy Ellipta?

Trelegy Ellipta is a combination medication containing fluticasone, umeclidinium and vilanterol and is used to improve the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These symptoms can include wheezing and shortness of breath.

How does Trelegy Ellipta work?

Trelegy Ellipta contains fluticasone, umeclidinium, and vilanterol and these medications help to control the symptoms of breathing problems which helps you to stay active. Fluticasone works by reducing the swelling of the airways in the lungs. Umeclidinium and vilanterol both work by relaxing muscles around the airways in the lungs which makes breathing easier. Trelegy Ellipta does not work immediately and should be used regularly in order to be effective.

• This medication should be inhaled orally and is usually prescribed to be taken once each day.
• Every time that you open the cover of the inhaler, a dose of the medication is prepared. If you open and close the cover without inhaling the medication, the dose is lost.
• Do not change or increase your Trelegy Ellipta dosage unless advised to by a doctor. Your condition will not improve quicker but you may increase the risk of side effects.
• You may not be able to taste or feel the drug when you inhale. This is normal and you do not need to take another dose.
• Trelegy Ellipta is most effective when it is used regularly. Try to take this medication at the same time each day.
• Gargle and rinse your mouth with water after each use of this inhaler.
• If you also use other inhalers, wait at least a minute between the use of each inhaler.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you have any drug allergies.
• Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
• Your medical history especially of infections, heart problems, high blood pressure, bone loss, urination difficulty, seizures, overactive thyroid, diabetes or liver disease.
• Your personal or family history of eye problems.
• If you are breast feeding.

Also be aware that:

• Trelegy Ellipta may cause QT prolongation. The risk of this is increased if you take any other medications which cause QT prolongation. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication.
• This inhaler can make you more likely to catch infections. Avoid contact with those who have contagious infections such as chickenpox, measles or flu.
• Make sure to tell all of your doctors and dentists that you take this medication (or have taken it in the last 12 months), especially before any surgery or emergency treatment.
• Trelegy Ellipta can temporarily slow down a child’s growth if used over a sustained period. Check your child’s height with a doctor regularly.
• This medication should only be used when clearly necessary during pregnancy.

Common Trelegy Ellipta side effects may include but are not limited to:

• Cold or flu symtoms.
• Nausea, stomach pain or vomiting.
• Constipation or diarrhea.
• Headache, back pain or joint pain.
• Mouth pain, hoarse voice or changes in your sense of taste.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following Trelegy Ellipta side effects:

• Tremors, nervousness, chest pain or a fast or pounding heartbeat.
• Fever, chills, shortness of breath or coughing with mucus.
• Sores or white patches in your mouth or throat.
• Pain while swallowing.
• Difficult or painful urination.
• Breathing problems including wheezing or choking.
• Changes to your vision including blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or seeing halos around lights.
• Signs of high blood sugar such as increased thirst, urination, dry mouth or a fruity breath odor.
• Signs of a low potassium level such as leg cramps, constipation, irregular heartbeats, chest fluttering, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness or a limp feeling.
• Signs of a hormonal disorder such as increased tiredness or muscle weakness, lightheadedness, nausea or vomiting.
