What is Ranexa?
Ranexa (Ranolazine ER) is a medication used to treat chronic angina which is an ongoing chest pain or pressure caused by the heart not getting enough oxygen. Ranexa works by improving blood flow to help your heart to work more efficiently. Ranexa is for chronic angina and not use during an emergency (acute) attack of the angina.
Directions
Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.
- Ranexa is an oral medication which can be taken with or without food.
- Swallow Ranexa whole. You should not crush, chew or break a tablet.
- This drug may be prescribed to be taken with other medications. Always follow your doctor’s directions.
Cautions
Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:
- If you have any drug allergies.
- Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
- Your medical history especially of liver disease, kidney disease or heart rhythm disorder.
- Your personal and family history of QT syndrome.
- If you are pregnant, planning on pregnancy or breast feeding.
Also be aware that:
- This medication can make you dizzy or lightheaded. You should not drive, operate machinery or do any other activity requiring alertness until it can be done safely.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Ranexa may include but are not limited to:
- Nausea.
- Constipation.
- Headaches or dizziness.
Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following ranolazine ER side effects:
- Feeling lightheaded or as if you may pass out.
- Headache alongside chest pain, severe dizziness or a fast or pounding heartbeat.
- Signs of a kidney problem such as little, painful or difficult urination, swelling in the feet or ankles, tiredness or shortness of breath.
