Why is Flovent prescribed?

Flovent Inhaler (Fluticasone) is an oral drug taken regularly as a preventative measure against asthma symptoms - including wheezing and shortness of breath. It is not meant to be used as an emergency relief drug. Fluticasone is a steroid medicine and it works by reducing the swelling that occurs in the lungs. Controlling uncomfortable breathing problems is important to maintain one's quality of life.

What is the most effective way to take Flovent?

Use Flovent Inhaler exactly as directed by your doctor. Ensure you read and understand all the information provided to you by your doctor and/or pharmacist. 

• The device (inhaler) is meant to be inhaled orally - avoid getting it in your eyes
• Shake the device well before each use
• Usually taken twice a day
• If two puffs at each dose are prescribed, wait at least 30 seconds in between each one
• Gargle and rinse your mouth out with water after each use of the inhaler 
• Clean the inhaler regularly as directed

Before using Flovent, 

• tell your doctor if you are allergic to Fluticasone or any other drug allergies you have
• tell your doctor if you are taking another oral corticosteroid regularly and about every other medication you are taking or plan to take (including nonprescription and herbal products)
• tell your doctor about your current and past medical condition such as infections, glaucoma, tuberculosis, liver disease, weak immune system, etc. 
• tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
• Do not use Flovent in case of an emergency. It will not work fast enough. 

Common side effects include but are not limited to:

• dry mouth 
• irritation in throat
• hoarseness

More serious side effects can occur. STOP taking Flovent and tell your doctor immediately if you experience:

• white patches appearing in/on your mouth area
• signs of blood vessel inflammation - including fever, weight loss, stomach pain, etc. 
• signs of infection - including chills, cough, increased urination, etc. 

Get immediate medical help if you have:

• severe worsening of breathing, wheezing, etc upon the use of the inhaler
• any signs of an allergic reaction - including hives, rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of any part of your face or body

What if I miss a dose of Flovent Inhaler?

Take the next dose at your scheduled time. Do not take more than prescribed and just take note of the missed dose(s) 

What do I do about the bad aftertaste in my mouth from the inhaler?

It is recommended that you rinse your mouth out after each use. If the aftertaste still persists, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.
